FLIR Thermal Imaging Installation at Dublin Airport June 2008
Case Study 1In June 2008, Instant Communications Ltd. installed an advanced form of CCTV system in Dublin Airport to monitor specific Airside locations. It utilises FLIR thermal imaging cameras which are capable of detecting extremely small temperature differences. These temperature differences are converted into real-time video images. Displayed on a monitor, this video image is extremely suited for night vision applications. Unlike other night vision systems that require low amounts of light to generate an image, a thermal imager needs no light at all. This makes it the perfect tool to see in absolute darkness.

Case Study 2Using an Ipsotek visual intelligence software solution the video images from fixed thermal imaging cameras are constantly being electronically analysed for any intrusion by unauthorised persons. This analysis is performed using a powerful set of algorithms that can analyse and detect potentially undesirable human behaviour such as unauthorised access.

Control room security personnel become immediately aware of any incident, being alerted by an alarm when an intrusion occurs with live images from the fixed camera relating to the intruded area automatically displayed on a monitor in the control room. In addition, the nearest Pan, tilt and zoom (PTZ) thermal imaging camera, automatically turns to view the intruded area. The security operator can then track movement by joystick control of these PTZ cameras.

Case Study 3Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) provide recorded video of all moving images. Video clips relating to specific intrusions as determined by the analytical software are also independently saved and are available for immediate review. These clips are logged and categorised thus maintaining a permanent visual record of all incidents within the monitored areas. Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) provide recordings of all images for a minimum of 31 days.

When the Ipsotek analytical software detects an intrusions it activates an alarm. The alarm alerts the security personnel who monitor the systems. When the analytical software identifies human intrusion it triggers an alarm in the monitoring control room. Case Study 4Real time images from the relevant fixed thermal imaging camera viewing the area where the intrusion occurs are switched into monitors in the control room.

In addition a PTZ thermal imaging camera will pan, tilt and zoom to view the area under scrutiny. This can then be used to track moving persons. The image from the PTZ camera can be switched to a daylight colour camera if the operator chooses.

Thermal Pic 1Thermal imagers are very effective for securing large open areas. Thermal imaging is invisible to intruders, allowing security personnel to monitor their actions without their knowledge, protecting people and assets before they are exposed to danger.
Thermal Pic 2The system is equipped with two separate thermal imaging cameras. One has a 35 mm wide angle lens, the other has a 140 mm narrow field of view lens.
Thermal Pic 3With the touch of a button you can switch between the infrared and the 2 Lux daylight / low light camera. It provides you additional information and identification when conditions permit. The daylight camera has an up to 26 times optical zoom. Displaying both the thermal image and the daylight image at the same time is also possible via Ethernet.
Thermal Pic 4Thermal Imaging Cameras offer advantages over low light and daylight cameras in applications where lighting is impossible, too expensive or long range performance is required. For border security, port security, and critical infrastructure applications, thermal imaging has proven vital to threat detection initiatives.
Thermal Pic 5Thermal Imaging Cameras will not only protect your assets against intruders during the darkest of nights. They are also perfectly suited to complement your existing cameras during daytime. They are not affected by glare from the sun. Thermal Imaging Cameras will allow you to see through the glare, and detect possible intruders.
Thermal Pic 6Intuitive joystick operation allows the operator to see 360° horizontal and +/-60° vertically, offering superb situational awareness. Unlike other night vision systems that require low amounts of light to generate an image, our Thermal Imaging Cameras do not need any light at all
Thermal Pic 7Thermal imaging cameras create a virtual security fence and are finding their way into many security and surveillance applications. Nuclear plants, petrochemical installations, warehouses, ports and airports, they all are vulnerable to theft or attack and can be protected by using thermal imaging cameras.
